Drumheller, Alberta

Drumheller, located in the Red Deer Valley, about one hours drive North-East of Calgary, has one overriding claim to fame - Dinosaurs.

This town of 6500 (founded in 1910 by Sam Drumheller) was originally a coal-mining town. This is, of course, due to the fact that 65 million (or so) years ago, the Red Deer Valley was swampy lowlands and forests, and home to dinosaurs big and small. Fossils are often found in the walls of the valley, the more impressive of which can be be found in either the Drumheller Dinosaur and Fossil Museum, or the Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology.

Drumheller is also part of the Dinosaur Trail, a 50 km circle tour through the Red Deer Valley. This trail is is dotted with entire dinosaur skeletons amid the cacti and hoodoos (sandstone "mushrooms", the result of erosion). Also along the trail is the Little Church (capacity 6), the Bleriot Ferry (for crossing the Red Deer River via a cable ferry), and Prehistoric Park, containing life-size models of many dinosaurs.

If you are in the region, a visit to the Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology is a must.
