Setting Up Your Own Site

If your are interested in setting up a mirror site for Views of the Solar System, feel free to do so. Views of the Solar System can be freely distributed as long as the pages used for non-profit applications, are not modified and my name stays on each page. There are two different versions of the tour. Version 1 excludes the high resolution images. The high resolution image links point to my primary site at Los Alamos. Version 2 contains the whole works including the high resolution images and requires approximately 160 Mb. Select which version suits your needs the best. Here's what you need to do to obtain your own copy:

Version 1 - No High Resolution Images (Updated on June 29, 1995)

  1. You will need 7 MB of disk space;
  2. make a directory and copy the file http://www.c3.lanl.gov/~cjhamil/solar.tar.gz (5 MB);
  3. Extract the archive with gunzip and tar; all the files will end up in the directory "solarsystem";
  4. Check the ownership and permissions; they should be set for public read-only access;
  5. Point your WWW browser to solarsystem/homepage.html; you should be up and running;
  6. Send me e-mail at cjhamil@lanl.gov with the URL of your copy; I will update my mirror list.

Version 2 - The Whole Works - (Update on April 20, 1995)

(This version is not available due to the lack of disk space. Please let me know if you need this version)

  1. You will need 840 MB of disk space;
  2. make a directory and copy the file http://www.c3.lanl.gov/~cjhamil/solar1.tar.gz (4.1 MB) and http://www.c3.lanl.gov/~cjhamil/solar2.tar (526 MB); the first tar file contains all the documents and in-line images; the second tar file contains all the full resolution images;
  3. Extract the first archive with gunzip and tar; extract the second archive with tar; all the files will end up in the directory "solarsystem";
  4. Check the ownership and permissions; they should be set for public read-only access;
  5. Point your WWW browser to solarsystem/homepage.html; you should be up and running;
