The Film Pioneer Oskar Messter

Messter, who died in December 1943, was the major German film producer before the Ufa was founded and worked in all branches of the film industry from 1896. He constructed projectors and film cameras, shot films himself, managed cinemas and discovered famous stars such as Henry Porten and Emil Jannings.
A touring exhibition of the Potsdam Film Museum to mark the 100th anniversary of cinematography in 1995.

Through the Eyes of a Child
Children's drawing and modern art

The aim of the exhibition is to document the influence of children's drawing on modern art. Comparing modern art with children's drawings, almost all of which come from collections compiled by the artists themselves, is able to give a fresh insight into understanding the art of the 20th century. On view are works by Kandinsky and Münter, Klee, Picasso, Miró and Dubuffet as well as examples of the Cobra Group and contemporary art.

Opera Festival

The 1995 Munich Opera Festival offers works by Leos Janacek, Hans Werner Henze and Aribert Reimann, stylistically very diverse examples of 20th century opera. But they are consciously not presented in isolation, but - together with works by Verdi and Donizetti - incorporated into the repertoires of Mozart, Wagner and Strauss.

Frank Eugene - Photographs 1880-1925

Frank Eugene, the painter and photographer born in New York, was one of the most important art photographers at the turn of the century. After returning to Munich, Eugene became the most important portrait photographer of the leading artists. Some 220 original photographs will be shown from the Photo Museum's collection and from American and European collections.

Carmina Burana by Carl Orff

The masterpiece of the Bavarian composer Carl Orff for the first time as a monumental scenic performance directed by Walter Haupt. The Munich Radio Orchestra, conductor Roberto Abbado, choir and soloists accompany the action, which takes place in a 20-meter-high theater machine, which represents "Fortuna". First part of the program "Romeo and Juliet" and "Overture Solonelle 1812" by P. I. Tchaikovsky.

Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Richard Strauss

This classical program, played by the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation's Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Lorin Maazel with the choir of the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation will delight the audience against the impressive backdrop of the Königsplatz.

Felix-Eduard Vallotton

This exhibition centers on the artist's late works. The emphasis of this Munich retrospective is Vallotton's (1865-1925) relationship to Germany and his role as the pioneer of the New Realism. As part of the retrospective 100 oil paintings, 20 drawings, 40 graphic prints and 20 objects from the field of applied arts will be on display.

Oktoberfest

With the traditional "Ozapft is" (the barrel is broached) the Lord Mayor opens the world's biggest popular festival at noon. For 16 days visitors from far an near throng onto the Wies'n, the venue of the Oktoberfest, to try out the old and new fairground attractions, to taste the local snacks and to enjoy beer and meals in the beer tents.

On Saturday, 16th September, the Oktoberfest landlords in festively decked coaches together with the magnificent drays of the Munich breweries, the waitresses on decorated wagons and the band that will play in the beer tents make their way trough the town to the Theresienwiese.

Procession of Local Costumes and Marksmen

The Procession of Local Costumes and Marksmen forms the climax at the first weekend of the Oktoberfest. Groups in local costumes from Old Bavaria, Franconia, Swabia, the German states and neighboring European countries present a festive and colorful picture as they parade through the streets of the city center.

Loie Fuller
Dance as a work of art - danced Art Nouveau

This exhibition shows posters and sculptures, mainly by French Art Nouveau artists, who inspired the American dancer. Photographs and original films document Loie Fuller's dances. Brygida Maria Ochaim reconstructs and stages the famous dances with the help of a performance and videos. Installations by contemporary artists refer to Louie Fuller and her dance.

The Arthurian Romance in 19th Century Art

The medieval world of sagas surrounding the Grail, King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table has inspired writers, musicians and artists since the time of the Romantic movement in a variety of ways. This exhibition tries for the first time to illustrate the rediscovery of the Grail myth by art in the light of selected works. One of the main features is the draft plans for the "Gralsburg" at Neuschwanstein and representations of Richard Wagner's opera themes.

Frames

The Marstalltheatre has managed to win the services of Peter Greenway for the project Frames on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the film. As part of an "outdoor exhibition", at nightfall light projections at 80 points in the town (Siegestor, Akademie etc) will illustrate abstract creative media used by films. At the same time it is intended to establish a relationship and picture will be on view all day in the Marstall.

With a chronological presentation of Kandinsky's works, the exhibition gives an insight into the path he followed up to the point of abstraction. Kandinsky's particular method of consistently reducing what is outwardly visible to what is suggested by gestures first becomes clear when all the artistic means at his disposal are revealed.

The Christmas Market

Christmas Market

In Advent the Munich Christmas Market on the Marienplatz puts the Munich population and visitors into the right mood for Christmas.Over 100 stands offer Christmas decorations, cribs and crib figures, bees-wax candles, toys and such Yuletide delicacies as gingerbread, cinnamon stars and mulled wine. A festive musical program is planned for every evening in Advent at 5.30 PM. As this year the Christmas Market will only last three weeks.
