Welcome to Sun's HotJava(tm) home page. HotJava is a dynamic, extensible WWW browser that showcases many of the capabilities of the Java(tm) language. Java is a new object-oriented programming language developed at Sun Microsystems to solve a number of problems in modern programming practice.

The Alpha 3 release for Solaris is now available. The Alpha 3 release contains bug fixes and a few new features including a "stop" button and support for the Gopher protocol. See the "Releases" section below for details.

The Alpha 2 release for Microsoft Windows NT is now available. See the "Releases section below for details.

Netscape has announced support for Java.


Releases

The Java and HotJava products are currently in the Alpha stage of development. The primary goal of the Alpha release is to demonstrate the concept of executable content, and enable WWW software developers to use the Java language to create compelling Web pages.

1.0Alpha3 for Solaris
The 1.0Alpha3 release runs on Sun Solaris 2.3, 2.4 and 2.5 SPARC-based machines. It does not run on Solaris 1 (Sun OS 4.x), Solaris x86, or any non-Solaris platform.

1.0Alpha2 for Microsoft Windows NT
The 1.0Alpha2 release runs on intel x86 machines with Windows NT 3.5. It does not run on Windows '95.

Source Release
The full sources for the 1.0Alpha3 Solaris release are available. See HotJava/Java Alpha3 Source Release for details. This page also includes information about what is involved in undertaking a port of HotJava/Java to another platform.
Additional Platform Support
In-house ports are underway for Microsoft Windows 95, and MacOS 7.5. These releases will be announced to our mailing lists when they are available. When ports to additional platforms are completed by others, their availability will also be announced.
