Well it happened again. Gopher Jewels was lesson number ten and was not
labeled. This is number eleven. I guess I need to give everyone %10 off
the next workshop.
Actually, I can do better than that.
The Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) invited me to speak on Internet
training at EDUCOM last week. I learn a good deal from the other speakers.
In particular, one unique idea, that I'd like to try with this workshop and
the ones I do in person, was presented by Scott Siddall of Kenyon College.
They do a one week workshop on the Internet for their faculty and *pay*
the faculty to attend. That makes sense. Faculty's time is
money, and I'm sure the administration wants the faculty to make the best
use of the information resources available through the Internet.
Let's see. We'll base our price on my weekly unemployment check from
Louisiana--$181, times the three weeks or so of this workshop,
times the 17,099 participants. That adds up to--Uh. Oh my......

SEARCH PREPARATION FOR VERONICA
The next way we will explore Gopherspace is by using the powerful
navigational software, Veronica. Veronica was developed by the
University of Nevada to help access Gopher directories and the many
files they contain.
Before we begin our search with Veronica, let's use some of the
Gopher skills we've already learned.
Go to the Gopher menu that takes you to "All the Gopher Servers in
the World."
(Use your the letter "v" for view if you added this to your personal
bookmark.)

This is the first of fifty pages listing Gopher directories.
Fortunately, the first item in this Gopher menu is called "Search
Gopherspace using Veronica", and that is our destination. However,
before going there, I suggest we add this to our bookmark as well.
After adding it to your bookmark, select this item. Here is what
the menu looks like:

We are given eight Gopher items in the menu "Search Gopherspace
using Veronica." The first six Gopher items end with "<?>" which
indicates that the items are index-search servers (we'll talk more
about that later). I suggest you add the first six menu items to
your bookmark.

I've only given one example, but you should continue by adding the
other five Gopher items.
There are two other items in the Gopher menu "Search Gopherspace
using Veronica"; "FAQ: Frequently-Asked Questions about Veronica"
and "How to compose Veronica queries (NEW June 24) READ ME!!." Do
you have questions about Veronica? Then read these two information
packages or save or mail them to yourself.
(I'll send number 8 "FAQ: Frequently-Asked Questions about
Veronica" separately for those who do not yet have Gopher access
but are following along. This document actually contains number 9
"How to compose veronica queries.")
