Scientific Planning

One of the major raisons d'etre of CASCA is to serve as a national forum for the scientific planning in astronomy. Although this function is served in part by the annual meetings of the Society, and by our newsletter, Cassiopeia, both of which serve to examine existing and proposed projects and facilities in astronomy on a regular basis, the committees of CASCA also serve as a vital element of the planning process. For this reason, members should feel free to raise an opinion or propose a scientific project at any time to the appropriate CASCA committee, with a copy of their submission being sent concurrantly to the president of the Society.

In addition to the fully functioning observatories that Canada is part of, Canada is a 15% partner in the Gemini project. In addition, Canadian astronomers are currently investigating possible future radio astronomy facilities which Canada may become involved in. Peter Dewdney of the DRAO has been appointed by HIA as the HIA Coordinator of Future Radio Astronomy Projects. One of the first steps in this process was the Radio Astronomy: Visions for the 21st Century conference held August 3-6, 1994 in Penticton. A working group has been established to coordinate and oversee the activities recommended in the report of the Scientific Organizing Committee of the Penticton workshop. A postscript version of the SOC's report to the NRC is also available.
