Final Writer 97 for the Amiga - New Features

What SoftWood has done to create Final Writer 97 is add as an option the same text entry features found only in dedicated desktop publishing programs. Final Writer 97 is the first program on any computer to offer both word processing and desktop publishing text creation in the same program! Now, with Final Writer 97 you can:

Enter text anywhere on a page.
Continue text on any other page.
Resize the frame (or space) containing text.
Flow text around other text.
Use "Snap-To" guides to align text and graphics.
Move text and graphics in one pixel increments using the arrow keys.

Can you use the new features in Final Writer 97? Consider how you use a typical word processor. First, you begin entering text at the top of page one. As you enter more text, it must be added to text you've already entered. With the exception of small text blocks available in some word processors, you can not simply enter text anywhere on a page.

Now consider what you can do in Final Writer 97. You can enter text anywhere on a page, and continue that text on any other page. You've seen this technique used in newspapers and magazines where a feature is started on one page and then continued on another page later in the document. You've also seen columns of different widths on the same page, as well as headlines that span more than one column and more than one line. These techniques are now available in Final Writer 97.

SoftWood has not changed the way you are used to working in Final Writer--we have simply provided new tools. These new tools along with the skills you have already developed will allow you to create newsleters, forms, brochures, and other documents never before possible in a word processor. Final Writer 97 truly offers the ultimate in document creation.

The key elements responsible for Final Writer 97's new features are:
Text Frames
Linked Text Frames
Articles
Snap-To guides
Arrow key positioning

Text Frames
A Final Writer 97 text frame is a rectangle containing lines of text. A text frame can be any width and height and may be positioned anywhere on a page. A text frame can have an automatic border drawn around it, or be borderless.

Text is entered into a text frame in the same manner as it is entered into the body of a word processing document. Every editing feature available for entering word processing text is also available when working with text frames. For example: Words wrap as you fill a line; you can set tabs, set margins; and change size size of text. You can even spell check and perform find and replace commands. In other words, entering text into a text frame is identical to entering text in the body of a document.

Creating a text frame is simple. All you do is click the mouse on the page where you want to enter text--and start typing. To assist you in formatting, Final Writer 97 automatically aligns the text frame within the left and right margins of the page. You have total control over the text frame at this point. You can move it anwhere on the page, move it to any other page, and change the width and height of the frame's rectangle.

Linked Text Frames
As you enter text into a text frame, the frame's rectangle may grow past the bottom of the page. When this occurs you can divide the text frame into multiple text frames, and position the new text frame somewhere else--either on the same page or on a different page in the document. This is done simply and conveniently with just clicks of the mouse.

Text frames provide the most flexible way to create and position text in a document. Their power enables you to accomplish tasks never before possible in a standard word processor. As you begin to experiment with text frames, you will find creating documents of any kind much easier than before.

Articles
Text that is contained in one or more text frames is called an "article". What makes using articles so powerful is that the text frames which hold an article can appear anywhere and in any order within a document. For example, an article may begin on page 1 and continue on page 3.

You can have an unlimited number of articles with an unlimited number of text frames within the same document. You can have multiple articles and text frames on the same page. There is virtually no limit to what you can do with text frames and articles in regards to creating and placing text within a document.

Snap-To Guides
A Final Writer 97 Snap-To guide is a horizontal or vertical line used to precisely position text frames and graphic objects on a page. Creating a Snap-To Guide is a snap--pardon the pun. All you do is position the mouse over a ruler, press the left mouse button, and drag the mouse off of the ruler on to the page.

As you drag the mouse off of the ruler, you will see a line drawn beneath the mouse pointer. You continue to drag the mouse until the line is at the position on the page where you want alignment to occur. When you release the mouse, the line remains on the page. Now you can move text frames and graphic objects anywhere near the guide and their position will automatically snap (move) to align with the guide.

You can have as many Snap-To guides as you wish on a page. Remember, you can have both horizontal and vertical guides. You can also use them together on the same page.

Let's say you want a text frame to be positioned exactly two inches fromthe top of the page, and three inches from the left of the page. All you need do is create a horizontal snap-to guide two inches from the top, and a vertical snap-to guide three inches from the left. Next, drag the text frame so its upper left corner is near the intersection of these two guides. Final Writer will move the text frame and align it exactly with the guides.

Arrow key positioning
Text frames and graphic objects may be moved in increments of one, five, or ten pixels using the arrow keys. This method of adjusting positions is often times more convenient for moving text and graphics small distances rather than dragging with the mouse.
