Hard Drive is Unvalidated

Product: Toaster Flyer LightWave

Platforms: Amiga

Problem: Amiga hard drive reports itself as unvalidated, 100% full. The drive should not be showing as full. Attempts to save or delete files on the drive fail.

This problem will occur if the system crashes while a file is being written to the hard drive. The hard drive's bitmap of allocated blocks is not valid. The error will often clear itself, when the system is rebooted. If revalidation of an unvalidated drive occurs during a reboot, the drive will go active for quite some time, while the OS analyzes the files and directories on the disk, and rebuilds the bitmap.

In some cases, the OS cannot revalidate the drive. The error can be repaired using a disk utility such as AmiBack Tools, Quarterback Tools, or DiskSalv.

If attempts to save to the drive fail frequently, and result in a crash, check the controller, the cabling, or the drive for possible faults.
