Setting MaxTransfer For A4000 IDE Hard Drives
Product: Toaster
Platforms: 4000 4000T
The procedure for changing the Maxtransfer setting for an IDE hard drive on an A4000 is as follows:
1) Double-click on the drive/partition that the WorkBench
software is located on.
2) Double-click on the drawer "Tools"
3) Double-click on the icon "HDToolBox"
4) The panel you see now is the main HDToolbox panel. The upper
half of the panel contains an information window which displays
the drives in your system. If any of the drives displayed are
*not* ST3144A model drives, then they very likely need the
MaxTransfer setting changed. Select the drive you wish to change
the settings for by clicking on the information line for
that drive.
5) Click on "Partition Drive"
6) Now you see the Partition Panel. Click on "Advanced Options".
7) In the upper half of the Partition Panel is a status bar which
displays the partitions of the hard drive. If that bar is solid black
entirely, then the drive is one partition. If this is the case,
then follow steps 8-12, skip step 13, and resume with step 14.
If the bar has a section that is solid black, and the remainder
of the bar is filled with a cross-hatch pattern, then the drive
has more than one partition. You will need to cycle through steps
8-13 for each partition on the drive.
8) Click on "Change..."
9) On the Change Panel, click in the field "MaxTransfer".
10) The field will more than likely read 0xffffff; (this is a
SCSI Hard drive setting) This needs to be changed to 0x1fe00
(the circles being zeros).
11) Make sure to hit Return after typing in the change, or it
will not take.
12) Click "OK" to return to the Partition Panel.
13) If the drive has more than one partition, click on the next
partition, and return to step 8.
14) Click "OK" again on the Partition Panel, to return to the
Main Panel.
15) Click on "Save Changes to Drive".
16) If there is more than one drive in the system, select the next
drive in the information window, then click on Partition Drive, and
return to Step 7.
17) If all drives and partitions have been properly set, then
click "Exit".
18) For the Paranoid In All of Us: Repeat steps 1-8 and check
each partition to assure that the changes have been saved.
19) Reboot the system to let the changes take effect. It is
often best to turn the system off, wait a safe interval (30
seconds), and then power the system back on.
Note: Keep in mind this procedure only affects items saved
after it has been done. Changing MaxTransfer will not restore
previously saved and damaged files.
*** VERY IMPORTANT ***
It is very important to remember that all of the partitions
need to have the MaxTransfer changed or the problems will
still exist when you save FrameStores to those partitions that
you did not change.
