Backup and Restore Failures

Product: Flyer

Platforms: 2000 3000 3000T 4000 4000T

Backup:

Problem: Backup attempt fails at the start with the error message "No Tape Inserted, or Drive Not Ready".

Possible causes listed in order beginning from most common reported:

1) If this error occurs when a tape in in the drive, this is usually a sign that the tape drive needs cleaning.

2) There is no tape in the drive. Put in a tape.

3) There is a problem with the drive or cabling.

Problem: Backup attempt fails with the error message that there were "Write Failures" on the tape drive.

Again, these are often due to dirty tape heads. If the error occurs immediately upon commencing the backup, you can be certain a cleaning is needed. If cleaning does not correct the situation, then you should try another tape. If another tape will work, then the first tape was actually faulty.

Restore:

Problem: During restore of a backup, the error message "Media is Bad, Insert next Tape," occurs.

This is usually due to attempting to restore to an already full Flyer video or audio drive. Check drive space, and make sufficient room to restore the backup.

Problem: Restore attempt fails with the error message that there were "Read Failures" on the tape.

If a tape actually has corrupt data, the current Flyer backup software has no way to skip a corrupt file. No further files can be read from that tape. For a multiple-tape backup, however, the user can restore tapes after the tape on which the failure has occurred by restoring the tapes in reverse order, starting with the last tape.

Material can be recovered, but the original project cannot be run if clips which were used are missing.

Problem: A Tape From a Multi-Tape backup is Missing. What can be recovered?

Since Flyer Backup can restore a multiple tape series in either forward or reverse order, the other tapes can be restored successfully.

As above, the original project is not recoverable if items used are missing due to the restore failure.

Problem: Backup or Restore attempt hangs with no error message.

If you start the operation but it just goes nowhere, showing no drive activity on either the Flyer drives or the tape unit, check to see that you have proper termination on the program and preview outputs of the Toaster. If you have not turned on your monitors or decks on the outputs, you must do so in order to proceed.
