System Locks Up Entering Windows® 3.x after Running VIVO Setup

Issue: If you upgrade a VESA Local Bus system running Windows 3.x (I.E. 486DXLB or JX30 board) with an Ensoniq® SoundscapeTM VIVO card, and then run the VIVO setup, the system locks going back into Windows unless a VGA video driver is loaded or the VIVO lines are skipped during an interactive boot.

Note: The VIVO card automatically selects IRQ 2/9 for the MIDI port, and that IRQ is sometimes used by a VESA Local Bus Video card.

Resolution: Follow the steps below to resolve this issue:

  1. Reboot the system, and bypass the startup files by pressing F5 when the system says "Starting MS-DOS..."
  2. Change to the c:\sndscape sub-directory.
  3. Edit the SNDSCAPE.INI file.
  4. Find the IRQ=9 line approximately three or four lines down.
  5. Change this line to read IRQ=10, if no other devices are using that IRQ.
