Ensoniq Sound Card and Magic Carpet II

If you are unable to run the Setsound utility in Magic Carpet II and you have an Ensoniq sound card installed, you will need to edit the Autoexec.bat file currently in use. The specific line you need to edit is the Set Blaster= line. It currently will look like this:

Set Blaster=A220 Ixx Dx T1
You will want to change it to look something like this:
Set Blaster=A220 I5 D1 T1

Note: Be sure to make a back up copy of the Autoexec.bat file before you edit. Where the A entry is the port address of the card, the I entry is the IRQ setting for the card, and the D entry is the DMA setting of the card. Those settings may need to be adjusted according to what your sound card is set for.

To determine the correct settings for your sound card (in Win95), you will want to right click once on the My Computer icon and choose the properties option from the list. Next you will want to click on the Device Manager tab and find the sound card entry. Now double click on that entry and choose the Ensoniq entry. You can either double click the entry or click on the properties button while the entry is highlighted. Once that is open you will want to click on the Dos Settings tab and look at the SB Emulation Settings area. There should be a check mark in the SB enable at 220 option, which is your port address. Now take a look at the IRQ and DMA settings. Those are what you will need to use on the above line.

To determine the correct settings for your sound card (in Windows 3.x) go to the control panel and double click on the drivers icon. Find the Soundscape DVD MIDI, WAVE, AUX driver, highlight it and click the setup button. The settings you are concerned with are the Interrupt and DMA Chan settings shown on the top level. Those are the settings you need for the IRQ and DMA values in the above line. The port address will remain at 220.

Note: By setting the Set Blaster= line to use specific values you may receive an error about the set blaster line being missing or poorly constructed. This is normal and does not mean the card is not working correctly.

If you are using Win95 the Autoexec.bat file can be in several places:

If you enter the game via an icon specifically created for this program, you will need to right click on the icon and choose properties. Now click on the program tab and click the advanced button. Make sure there is a check mark in the box next to the MS-DOS mode entry. Put the colored dot in the circle next to the specify a new ms-dos configuration entry. This is where you will need to change the Set Blaster= line. The same procedures apply to the other areas you may find in the autoexec.bat file.

If you do not have an icon created, and you directly access the executable file, you will need to go to the windows explorer. Now find the directory the program file is in and find the file. Right click once on the file and follow the procedures above.

If you have a Dos Mode icon on the Windows desktop, then you will need to right click on the icon and follow the same procedures as above.

Note: Always record any steps or changes you make to allow a less painful return to original settings if necessary. If you are using Windows 3.x the Autoexec.bat file can be found in the root directory on the boot drive, normally the C:\ drive. To edit this file at the c:\ prompt, you would type in Edit autoexec.bat and hit Enter. This will open the file in an editable format. Once you have made the changes, save the file and reboot the system to initiate the change.
