How to Get the Gateway Solo 2100 or 2200 Docking Station Parallel Port to Work in Windows 95


This document contains instructions on properly re-installing the printer port. This eliminates conflicts when adding such external devices as printers, tape backups, etc. This document assumes that the CD-ROM drive is D: and all software is installed on the C: drive.

Changing the Printer Port Configuration

  1. At the Windows 95 Desktop screen, right click the My Computer icon in the upper right hand corner of the screen. Click the word Properties on the menu that appears on the screen.
  2. Across the top of the System Properties window are four tabs: General, Device Manager, Hardware Profiles, and Performance. Click the Device Manager tab to view this information.
  3. In the list of hardware displayed on the screen, double click Ports (COM & LPT) to display the devices beneath this. Click the Printer Port(LPT) setting to highlight it. Click the Properties button at the bottom of this window to view the information.
  4. Across the top of the Printer Port Properties window are three tabs: General, Driver, and Resources. Click the Driver tab to view the information, then click the Update Driver button in the lower right hand corner of the window.
  5. An Update Device Driver Wizard window appears. This window prompts you to allow Windows 95 to search the drives on the computer for the specified driver files. At the bottom left hand side of this window, click No, Select driver from list, once to place a bullet mark beside it. Click the Next button at the bottom of the screen to continue.
  6. At the Update Device Driver Wizard window, Windows 95 originally identifies the device as ECP Printer Port and uses the drivers for Printer Port. At the bottom left hand side of this click Current Drive once to place a bullet mark beside it. Click the Next button at the bottom of the screen to continue.
  7. A Select Device window appears. On the lower left hand side of the window, click once in the circle beside Show all hardware to place a bullet mark beside it. In the Manufacturers box, click once on Standard port types to highlight it. In the Models box on the right hand side, click once on Printer Port to highlight it. Click the Next button at the bottom of the screen to continue.
  8. Insert the Windows 95 CD disc into the CD-ROM drive. The Update Device Driver Wizard window prompts for the location of the files. Click the Other Location button in the bottom center of the window. The Select Other Location window appears. In the Copy manufacturer's files from: box type d:\Win95 and press Enter. Click the OK button at the bottom of the Select Other Location window to continue. The Update Device Driver Wizard window appears again with the Printer Port (LPT) displayed. Click the Finish button at the bottom of the window.
  9. Click the Close button at the bottom of the Printer Port Properties window. At the Systems Properties window, click the OK button to return to the Windows 95 desktop screen. The configuration of the parallel port is now complete.
