Configuring MS-DOS based applications to run in Windows 95 on a Gateway Solo 2200
Using the CD-ROM, sound, and mouse in a MS-DOS environment requires configuring real mode drivers to run with Windows 95 as explained below. The version of CardWiz sold with the Gateway Solo 2200 can not be installed through Windows 95 at this time. The installation instructions assume the CD-ROM drive letter is drive D:.
Creating the 'Run MS-DOS Applications' Icon
- Right click any open spot on the desktop. Highlight the word New on the menu that appears. Click the word Shortcut to create the MS-DOS icon.
- The Create Shortcut window appears on the screen. In the Command line: box, type:
command.com
and click the Next button at the bottom of the window.- The Select a Title for the Program window appears next. In the Select a name for the shortcut: box, type Run MS-DOS Applications. Click the Finish button on the bottom of the window to create the icon and return to the Windows 95 desktop.
- Right click the mouse on the new icon you just created on the desktop. To modify the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT of the shortcut, click the word Properties.
- The application's Properties window will appear on the screen. Along the top of the window are six tabs: General, Program, Font, Memory, Screen, and Misc. Click the Programs tab to open that screen. Toward the bottom center of this window, click on the Advanced button to continue
- The Advanced Program Settings window appears. Click the the MS-DOS mode box to insert a check mark. Click the mouse in the Warn before entering MS-DOS mode box to remove the check mark. Click the mouse in the Specify a new MS-DOS configuration bullet to select these settings. Click the Configuration button in the lower right hand corner of the window.
- The following message may appear on the screen:
Warning! Any data currently entered for the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT will be replaced by the new configuration you select. Do you want to continue?
Click the Yes button to continue.
- The Select MS-DOS Configuration Options window appears. Click the Expanded Memory (EMS) box to insert a check mark. Click OK three times to return to the Windows 95 desktop. The following message may appear on the screen:
This program is set to run in MS-DOS mode and cannot run while other programs are running. All other programs will close if you choose to continue. Do you want to continue?
Click the Yes button to continue.- The icon is now ready to use for MS-DOS mode. Double click the Run MS-DOS Applications icon. The computer exits Windows 95 and reboots into MS-DOS mode. When the computer finishes booting, the C:\> or C:\WINDOWS> prompt should appear. Now the CD-ROM drivers, sound drivers, and mouse drivers must be loaded through this icon.
Real Mode CD-ROM drivers
- To install the CD-ROM drivers, insert the Gateway Solo 2200 boot diskette into the external floppy drive. At the Windows 95 desktop, double click the Run MS-DOS Applications icon. The computer exits Windows 95 and the following message may appear on the screen. Warning! Any data currently entered for the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT will be replaced by the new configuration you select. Do you want to continue?
Click the Yes button to continue.- The system boots up to the Gateway Solo 2200 boot diskette in the A: drive. A menu starts as shown below:

Exit Program, Go Back to DOS
By default Install CD-ROM Drivers on your Hard Disk is highlighted. Press ENTER to continue.- A Information window appears, providing a brief explanation about the CD-ROM drivers. To install the CD-ROM drivers, press F1 to continue the installation.
- A copying window appears displaying the files that are copied to your hard drive. Once the files have been copied, press ENTER to return to the main menu.
- At the main menu, press the down arrow on your cursor control pad to highlight the option, Exit Program, Go Back to DOS. Press the ENTER to exit to DOS.
- At the C:\> prompt type: exit and press Enter to return to Windows 95.
- The files copy to the hard drive and lines are added to the Autoexec.bat and Config.sys.
Note: The lines that are added to these files are included in the sample file in the "Sound Card" section of this document.Synaptics Drivers
- To begin the installation insert the System CD into the CD-ROM drive. At the Windows 95 desktop, double click the Run MS-DOS Applications icon. When the computer finishes booting, the C:\> or C:\WINDOWS> prompt should appear. From the DOS prompt, type the following string:
D:\windrv\mouse\inst31.exe- At the Synaptics TouchPad Installation Screen, press ENTER to continue.
- The next screen asks where you will be using the mouse. Use the arrow keys to highlight DOS Only, and press ENTER to continue.
- The next screen confirms the directory to install the Synaptics TouchPad drivers. Accept the default path of C:\SYNTOUCH and press ENTER. The mouse driver files are now copied.
- The next screen is Working - please wait. The install program confirms updating the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat. Press ENTER to continue. The installation of the Synaptics TouchPad is now complete. Press ESC to exit to DOS.
- At the C:\> prompt type exit and press Enter to return to Windows 95.
Sound drivers
- For most MS-DOS applications, a SET BLASTER line for the ESS 1878 Sound Card needs to be included to the AUTOEXEC.BAT for the Run MS-DOS Applications. To do this, Right click the Run MS-DOS Applications icon. Click the word Properties that appears on the menu.
- The application's Properties window appears on the screen. Along the top of the window are six tabs: General, Program, Font, Memory, Screen, and Misc. Click the Programs tab to open that screen. Toward the bottom center of this window, click the Advanced button to continue.
- The Advanced Program Settings window appears. Make sure there is a check mark in the MS-DOS mode box. Make sure there is not a check mark in the Warn before entering MS-DOS mode box. Make sure the Specify a new MS-DOS configuration has a bullet beside it. Refer to the entries below for all of the lines that need to be in the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files for this icon.
Note: Make sure that the set sound parameters match the CMOS settings.

SET BLASTER= A220 I5 D1- Once all necessary selections are made, click the OK button to return to the Advanced Program Settings window. Click OK two more times to return to the Windows 95 desktop.
- The icon is now configured to run in MS-DOS mode. When the Run MS-DOS Applications icon is double clicked, the computer exits Windows 95 and reboots into MS-DOS mode. When the computer finishes booting, the C:\WINDOWS> prompt should appear. When finished with the MS-DOS application, type EXIT and press Enter to reboot the system and return to Windows 95.
Customizing the 'Run MS-DOS Applications' icon for individual applications
- Right click the 'Run MS-DOS Applications' icon on the Windows 95 desktop.
- Click the word Copy that appears on the menu.
- Right click again on an open spot on the Windows 95 desktop, then click the word Paste that appears on the menu. Another icon titled 'Copy of Run MS-DOS Applications' appears on the desktop.
- Right click the 'Copy of Run MS-DOS Applications' icon, then click the word Properties on the menu that appears. Across the top of the screen are six tabs: General, Program, Font, Memory, Screen, and Misc. Click the Program tab to open it.
- Click the Advanced button on the bottom center of the screen. The Advanced Program Settings window appears. Make sure the MS-DOS mode box is checked and Specify a new MS-DOS mode is bulleted.
- Use the scroll bar to find the last line in the Autoexec.bat for MS-DOS mode window. Click the mouse on the first blank line at the bottom of the Autoexec.bat file. Type
cd\directory name
and press the Enter key to move to the next line. Now type
application start command
and click the OK button at the bottom center of this window.
Note: Replace the directory name and application start command with the command needed to start the application and the directoy in which it's located. If you're unsure, consult the documentation that came with the application for these commands.- To further customize this icon, click the Change icon button in the lower right hand corner of this window and select a unique icon for this application. Once you finish this, click the OK button until you return to the Windows 95 desktop.
- Right click the 'Copy of Run MS-DOS Applications' icon, then click the word Rename on the menu that appears. Now type
name of the application
and press Enter to rename this icon.
Note: replace name of the application with a unique name so you can easily identify the icon for the application.- Whenever you wish to play the application, simply insert the CD disc in the CD-ROM drive and double click the icon. When you finish running the application, exit according to the application instructions. Now type
Exit
at the C:\> prompt and press Enter to return to Windows 95.
