Troubleshooting the STB Trio 64V+ Video Cards and Plug & Play Monitors in Windows 95

This document contains troubleshooting instructions for alleviating lockups entering Windows 95. This issue is most commonly seen when starting the computer for the first time. This issue only appears on video cards with the part number VIDPCI008ABWW or VIDPCI009ABWW and monitors with the part number MONO14006AAWW or MONO15008AAWW. The part numbers are located on the invoice sheet that shipped with the computer.

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. As the computer boots up and "Starting Windows 95..." appears on-screen, the system emits one short beep. At this time, press the F8 key on the keyboard.
  2. The Microsoft Windows 95 Startup Menu appears on-screen. Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter to continue.
  3. Once Windows 95 is started in Safe Mode, the following message appears:

    This special diagnostic mode of Windows enables you to fix the problem that is keeping you from starting Windows normally. The problem could be caused by your network or hardware settings. Make sure these settings are correct in Control Panel, and then try restarting Windows. For more information, see the Troubleshooting section in Help. While in safe mode, some of your devices may not be available.

    Click the OK button at the bottom of the window to continue. This will take you into Windows 95.
  4. Click the secondary (usually the right)mouse button once on any empty spot on the desktop. A box will appear on-screen. Single click the primary (usually the left) mouse button on Properties.
  5. A window titled Display Properties appears on-screen. Under the Display Properties title bar are four tabs: Background, Screen Saver, Appearance, and Settings. Click on the Settings tab.
  6. Click the Change Display Type button located in the lower right corner. The Change Display Type window appears with the Adapter Type in the top half and the Monitor Type in the bottom half of the window.
  7. Click the Change button, located on the right hand side of the Monitor Type setting. This will open the Select Device window. On the bottom left hand side of the window there is a bullet beside Show all Devices. The window then displays a list of Manufacturers on the left hand side and Models on the right hand side.
  8. At this point the specific type of monitor attached to the computer is selected. Make sure that you know the type of monitor attached to the computer.
    • If you have a Crystal Scan 14 (13.4" viewable), part number MON014006AAWW
      In the Manufacturers window, use the primary mouse button to highlight Gateway.
      In the Models window, use the secondary mouse button to highlight the Gateway Crystal Scan 1024NI monitor.

    • If you have a Crystal Scan 15 (13.9" viewable), part number MON015008AAWW
      In the Manufacturers window, use the primary mouse button to highlight Gateway.
      In the Models window, use the primary mouse button to highlight the Gateway Vivitron 15 (13.9 viewable).
  9. Once these selections are made, click OK to close this window. Click on the Close button to close the Change Display Type Window. Click on the OK button located on the Display Properties window.
  10. Click the Start button in the lower left hand corner of the screen. Click the Shut Down setting on the Start Menu. In the Shut Down Windows box click the left mouse button to place a bullet beside the Restart the Computer? setting. Click on the Yes button to confirm this action. The computer will boot into Windows 95 normally.

Additional Troubleshooting Steps

  1. If the computer still won’t boot into Windows 95, reboot the system and follow steps 1 through 6 as listed above and then continue with the following.
  2. Click the Change button located beside the Adapter Type settings on the right hand side of the screen. On the bottom left hand side of the window make there is a bullet beside Show all Devices.
  3. Highlight STB Systems in the Manufacturers screen located on the left hand side of the screen. In the Models box on the right side of the screen, scroll through the list until STB Powergraph 64 Video, English, without Vision 95 is highlighted.
  4. Once these selections are made, use the left mouse button to click the OK button to close this window. Click on the Close button to close the Change Display Type Window. Click on the OK button on the Display Properties window.
  5. Click the Start button in the lower left hand corner of the screen. Click the Shut Down setting on the Start Menu. In the Shut Down Windows box click the left mouse button to place a bullet beside the Restart the Computer? setting. Click on the Yes button to confirm this action. The computer will boot into Windows 95 normally.
