Installing the TelePath IIv Plug & Play Modem in Windows 95

This document applies to the TelePath IIv modem, Gateway 2000 part number MODISA004AAUS.
This modem can be configured in either legacy mode or plug and play mode. When the modem is received from Gateway 2000 as an Add-On or replacement component, it is set in legacy mode at Com 1, IRQ 4.

To Install the Modem in Legacy Mode:

  1. Before installing the modem refer to your manual for instructions on entering the Setup program (CMOS).
  2. Enter the Setup program and disable the Com port you wish to use for your modem. (Note: The mouse may use a Com port on systems made prior to November, 1993.)
  3. Save Setup and exit. This will reboot your computer.
  4. After the system has rebooted, shut down and place the modem card in an open slot on the system board.
  5. Boot the system into Windows 95 and go to the Add New Hardware icon, located in the Control Panel.
  6. On the opening screen select Next.
  7. You will be asked if you want to run detection. Verify that Yes is checked and click Next.
  8. Windows 95 will automatically detect the modem as the Sportster 14400 Fax PC Plug & Play.
  9. Follow the Wizard through completion and click Finish. Installation is completed.

To configure the modem in plug and play mode:

  1. Download the most recent MDMUSRVI.INF file for your modem.
  2. Refer to your manual to remove all jumpers from the modem.
  3. Place the modem in an open slot on the system board.
  4. When the system is booted Windows 95 will prompt you with the New Hardware Found dialog box. The message reads as follows

    U.S. Robotics Inc. Sportster 14.4 FAX Internal.
    Select which driver you want to install for your new hardware:


  5. There are four bulleted items to choose from

    Windows default driver (This item is grayed)
    Driver from disk provided by hardware manufacturer
    Do not install a driver (Windows will not prompt you again)
    Select from a list of alternate drivers


  6. Select the last option, select from a list of alternate drivers.
  7. Under the list of manufacturers choose Gateway 2000 and under the model choose Gateway 2000 TelePath II 14400 Internal.
  8. Now Click OK. The installation is complete.
