Driver Lines for LMSI CD-ROM and Sound Card Combinations

Why does the CD-ROM fail to load as I boot up the system?

Many times a CD-ROM drive is failing to work because the lines in the AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS files are set incorrectly. This may be caused by: To see if the lines in your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS match what Gateway uses for its defaults, you need to view the contents of these files. To do this, at the C:\>: prompt, type:
type
followed by the name of the file (i.e. CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT). Then compare the lines in those files with the default lines found in the sections below. Try matching the lines up but make sure that you only have one set of lines in the files. If you find differences between the way the lines read in your files and the way that the lines are in the following sections, you need to edit these files individually to make the changes. To do this, at the C:\>: prompt, type:
edit autoexec.bat
and press Enter. Modify the file, press the ALT key to highlight the word FILE at the top of the screen. Press the F key to bring down the File Menu. Press the X key to exit, and then press the Y key to save the changes. This exits you to the C:\>: prompt. Next type:
edit config.sys
and press Enter. Modify the file, press the ALT to highlight the word FILE at the top of the screen. Press the F key to bring down the File Menu. Press the X key to exit, and then press the Y key to save the changes. This exits you to the C:\>: prompt. Reboot the system for the changes you made to take effect.

If you did not find any of the lines referring to your CD-ROM or sound card as listed in the following sections, the drivers may not be loaded on your system. You need to refer to your Userís Guide and follow the instructions on how to load the drivers. Once the drivers are reloaded, compare the lines again and make any modifications necessary. Always make sure that the jumper or switch settings match the settings in the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files. Consult your Userís Manual for the different switch and jumper settings. The manual will also tell you what the specific switch settings are within the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files.

Some special considerations when using the following sections: If there are lines listed in any section seperated by the word OR in bold letters your system file should match up with only one of those possibilities. The words that are highlighted within the line are the names of the directories where the drivers are stored. There are other lines in the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files that do not pertain to the CD-ROM or sound card. DO NOT delete or modify any lines other than the ones pertaining to the CD-ROM or sound card.
