GATEWAY 2000 E-Series PCs equipped with Intel LANDesk client manager

Self-diagnostics makes PCs easier to use and support

[Gateway E-1000 PC] NORTH SIOUX CITY, SD, May 21, 1997 - Gateway 2000, Inc. (NYSE: GTW), one of the world's largest direct marketers of personal computers, announces the selection of Intel's LANDesk® Client Manager v3.01 software as Gateway's preferred choice for desktop management instrumentation. LANDesk Client Manager is part of the variety of hardware and software management tools in the Gateway E-Series PC line unveiled today in New York by company officials.

"Intel LANDesk Client Manager simplifies local and network management of desktop client systems," said Jim Collas, senior vice president, Gateway 2000 global products. "It moves beyond identifying problems by also providing suggestions for solving those problems. LANDesk Client Manager monitors PC health to give customers local and remote alerts and views of what's going on. By incorporating this feature into our build to order model, Gateway 2000 can lower the total cost of PC ownership while maximizing system performance."

LANDesk Client Manager provides comprehensive self-help diagnostics. A PC health monitor provides local and remote alerting of potential problems along with inventories of hundreds of hardware and thousands of software items. Automatic polling and alerting for memory and hardware conditions help minimize downtime and promote more effective troubleshooting. LANDesk Client Manager takes advantage of special hardware on the PC to provide predictive failure mechanisms for identifying potential problems with the hard drive, fan, power supply or temperature.

"Today's IS managers need both manageability and performance from PCs," said Ed Ekstrom, vice president of Intel's Internet and communication group and general manager of the system management division. "Gateway 2000 systems configured with LANDesk Client Manager will not only provide business owners with a powerful Intel-based system, but will provide PC health monitoring and easy remote access for network management and support."

All Gateway E-Series systems will provide a wide variety of hardware and software management tools. All E-Series systems will ship with LANDesk Client Manager and are DMI 1.1 compliant. Features include SMART drive and PC Health indicators, temperature and voltage monitors, intrusion detection, POST results, hardware and software discovery and remote access. With these features, organizations can reduce or avoid costly product failures, and reduce or eliminate the need for MIS personnel to diagnose problems on-site.
