Gateway 2000 announces expansion of its Hampton, Va. manufacturing facility
Expansion will add 300 jobs
Currently, Gateway employs over 650 people in Hampton. The expansion is expected to create 300 additional manufacturing jobs. The Hampton facility began production of desktop computers in July 1996. In December 1996, the company announced plans to add a technical support call center in Hampton, to be completed sometime during the second quarter of 1997.
"We are very pleased with the success and subsequent growth of our Hampton facility," said Bob Spears, senior vice president of Gateway 2000's Americas Group. "Hampton’s positive business climate and exceptional people are an excellent fit for Gateway’s values-based way of doing business."
In addition, the expansion will increase production capacity by 50 percent, with an increase in square footage from 284,000 square feet to 422,000 square feet. Spears added that the expansion represents an additional $10 million investment in the Hampton economy. Other U.S. manufacturing sites are located in North Sioux City, S.D., and Sioux Falls, S.D.
