How to Resolve Faxing and Printing Problems associated with FaxWorks

This document provides step-by-step instructions for resolving some of the most common FaxWorks printing related issues experienced by Gateway 2000® customers.
ISSUE: When faxing from Microsoft Word 7.0 using FaxWorks, the system appears locked or the send fax dialog box does not appear. After entering information in the Send Fax dialog box and clicking the Send Fax button, the system may lock after rasterizing the pages. Ctrl + Alt + Delete must be used to bring up the Close Program dialog box to end task on the items that say not responding.

RESOLUTION: Disable background printing in Microsoft Word.

  1. Open Microsoft Word. Across the top of the document screen, click the word Tools. From this menu click the word Options that appears at the bottom of this list.
  2. Across the upper portion of this window are several tabs, such as View, General, Edit, etc.. Click the Print tab to view the information.
  3. In the Printing Options section of this tab located in the upper left hand side of the screen, remove the check from Background Printing. Click the OK button to return to Microsoft Word. Click the X in the upper right hand corner of the screen to close Microsoft Word. Re-open the application.
ISSUE: When attempting to print a fax to FaxWorks from Microsoft Word or Microsoft Works, the following error message may appear: Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current printer setup.

RESOLUTION: The FaxWorks printer may not be using the correct printer driver. To select the correct driver:

  1. Click the Start button in the lower left hand corner of the screen. Click the word Settings that appears on the menu. Click the Printers folder to open the Printers window.
  2. Right click the FX-WORKS printer icon that appears in the window. Click the word Properties that appears on the menu. Across the top of the screen are a number of tabs. Click the Details tab to view this information
  3. Under "Print using the following driver:", the word install may appear. If so, click the down arrow beside this box, then click the word FX-WORKS from the drop down list. Click the OK button to return to the Printers window. Click the X to close the Printer window and return to the Windows 95 desktop. Note: If FX-WORKS is already in the "Print using the following driver:" text box, your FaxWorks printer driver is installed correctly.
  4. Click the Start button in the lower left hand corner of the screen. Click the word Shut down that appears on the menu. Click the Restart the computer? option, then click the Yes button to reboot the computer.
ISSUE: When attempting to print a concluded fax from the fax log in FaxWorks to an HP LaserJet 5MP, a blank page is printed. Note: The fax will be printed from other areas of the fax log and other applications correctly.

RESOLUTION: As an immediate work around, a compatible printer driver, such as HP LaserJet Series II, may be used. However, the recommended resolution is to contact Hewlett-Packard for the updated driver for the HP 5MP printer.

ISSUE: After printing out a fax, the speakerphone option in FaxWorks becomes inoperable. This may occur on various printers. Various other Fax printing problems have been resolved using the following resolution.

RESOLUTION: The issue arises when the printer name contains more than 26 characters. The printer must be renamed so that the name contains 26 characters or less. Follow the steps below to resolve the issue. Make sure the FaxWorks Call Center is closed before performing the resolution.

  1. Click the Start button in the lower left hand corner of the screen. Click the word Run that appears on the menu. In the Open: box type:
    FAXWORKS.INI
then click the OK button to open this file.
  2. Scroll down to the [RECEIVE] section and find the line that reads Default Printer=. Delete everything after the = on that line. Be careful not to delete any other lines before or after the Default Printer= line. Close the file by clicking the X in the upper right hand corner. Click YES to save the file when prompted.
  3. Click the Start button in the lower left hand corner of the screen. Click the word Settings that appears on the menu. Double click the Printers icon to open it.
  4. Highlight your default printer. If you are not sure which printer is the default right-click each printer listed. When a menu appears that has a check next to Set As Default, you have found your default printer.
  5. Right click the default printer. Click the word Rename on the menu that appears.
  6. Delete a few characters or rename the printer so that the name is 26 characters or less (spaces included). If the printer name is less than 26 characters, do not rename the printer. Note: When a fax is printed, it will put the name of the printer back in the FAXWORKS.INI file.
  7. Once the name has been changed, select Enter. Once FaxWorks is opened, the speakerphone will operate correctly after printing out a fax.
