Printing to Other Computers Using Infrared Devices and Direct Cable Connection In Windows 95


This document assumes that Direct Cable Connection and the Windows® 95® Infrared Device driver are installed. If using an Infrared module, connect the module to the serial port on the desktop before configuring Direct Cable Connection. Two systems must be connected with an Infrared device in Direct Cable Connection. To configure Direct Cable Connection, refer to "How to Install and Troubleshoot Direct Cable Connection in Windows 95".

Configuring the Host Computer

  1. On the Host computer, click the Start button in the lower left hand corner. Click the word Settings that appears on the menu. Click the word Printers to open it. In the Printers window, verify that the same printer driver is installed on both computers.
  2. On the Host computer, right click the printer being used. Click the word Sharing from the pulldown menu. The printer Properties screen appears with the Sharing tab displayed, choose Share As.
  3. Depending on the Printer driver installed there, are several tabs across the top of this window. Click the Details tab. In this tab, verify that the port is set to the physical printer port on the back of the Host computer, usually LPT1. Once verified, click the OK button.

Configuring the Guest Computer

  1. On the Guest computer, click the Start button int he lower left hand corner. Click the word Settings that appears on the menu. Click the word Printers to open it.
  2. In the Printers window, right click the printer being used and click the word Properties from the pulldown menu.
  3. Depending on the Printer driver installed, there are several tabs across the top of this window. Click the Details tab. In the Details tab, click the Capture Printer Port button. The Capture Printer Port window is displayed. In the box provided, type:
    \\computer name\printer name
    then click the OK button. The Computerís name is the Hostís Computer Name, and the printer name is the printer attached to the host computer.
  4. Within the Details tab, the newly created path appears beneath Print to the following port. Click the OK button to continue. The Guest computer should now print to the Host computer, using the Infrared device.

Printing to an Infrared Printer in Windows 95

    This section is only for printing to a physical printer that has an Infrared lens.

  1. At the Windows 95 desktop, click the Start button in the lower left hand corner. Click the word Settings that appears on the menu. Click the word Printers to open it.
  2. In the Printers window, right click on the printer being used. Click the word Properties from the pulldown menu.
  3. The Printer Properties window is displayed. Depending on the Printer driver installed there are several tabs across the top of this window. Click the Details tab. In the Details tab, click the down arrow beside Print to the following port and click once on LPTX:(Infrared Printing (LPT) Port) to highlight it. Where X will be the infrared virtual port.
    Note: If configuring an HP LaserJet 5P, select the COMX:(Infrared Serial (COM) Connections Port). Where X will be the infrared virtual port.
    Click the OK button and the printer is now configured to print using the infrared port.
