Setting Up the Ensoniq Soundscape VIVO Sound Card and MS-DOS Applications in Windows 95

Some of the information for this document was provided directly from Ensoniq Corporation. This document contains important information regarding the installation and use of the Ensoniq® SoundscapeTM VIVO or VIVO 90 driver under the Windows® 95 operating system. Print this document and keep it for later reference. If you have a previous version of the Soundscape Windows 95 driver currently running on the computer, skip the section titled "Installing the Windows 95 Soundscape VIVO software for the first time."

Removing previous versions of Ensoniq drivers

Always remove older versions of Soundscape software before installing the Windows 95 VIVO or VIVO 90 specific drivers. Here's why. When Windows 95 boots up, it keeps a log of all the different Base ports, IRQs and DMAs used by each device. With Soundscape installed, the system allocates these values as being used. When the updated drivers are installed, Windows 95 sees that the original values are being used and assigns the new drivers new values. These new values will not work, especially the new Base port value. The rule of thumb is always remove the Soundscape drivers before updating.If you do not have a previous version of Ensoniq Soundscape VIVO or VIVO 90 drivers already loaded on the computer, skip to the next section.
  1. Right click the My Computer icon in the upper left hand corner of the screen. Click the word Properties that appears on the menu. Across the top of the System Properties window are four tabs: General, Device Manager, Hardware Profiles, and Performance. Click the Device Manager tab to open it.
  2. Scroll through the list of components. Click the + symbol beside Sound, video and game controllers to display the sound card type.
  3. Click on the ENSONIQ Soundscape VIVO selection to highlight it. Click the Remove button at the bottom right hand side of this screen. A message appears informing you that you are about to remove this device. Click the OK button to continue.
  4. The Soundscape VIVO Sound Blaster emulation driver should disappear also. If it does not, click on it, then click the Remove button. Once this is complete click the Close button at the bottom of this window. At this point you are prompted to re-boot the computer. Click the NO button.
  5. Right click the My Computer icon again. Click Explore to open the Explorer application. On the left hand side of the screen, locate the Windows folder. Click the + symbol beside the Windows folder to expand the subdirectories.
  6. Click on the word View at the top of the Explorer screen to open that menu. Click the word Options to open that window. Under the Hidden files: section, click the mouse to insert a bullet beside the Show all files settings. Click the OK button to return to the Explorer screen.
  7. Find the Inf folder located under the Windows folder and double click it to open it. Scroll through the files on the right hand side until the list of OEMx.INF files appear. Note: The letter x is representative of a number, such as 0,1, etc., depending on the number of OEM drivers on the hard drive. Double click each one until you locate the one specifically for Ensoniq. The word Ensoniq appears at the top of the specific OEMx.INF file when it is opened. Once this file is located, click the X on the upper right hand corner of the viewing screen to close it, then delete this file. Soundscape is now removed from the system and the updated Windows 95 drivers can be installed. Note: If you installed the drivers for the Soundscape sound card more than once, there is an OEMx.INF file for each time the drivers were installed. You need to repeat this step until all OEMx.INF files are deleted.
  8. Once you return to the Windows 95 desktop, click the Start button in the lower left hand corner of the screen. Click on Shut Down. When prompted to shut down the computer select Restart the computer from the list. The system shuts down and reboots. Continue to the next section.

Loading drivers for MS-DOS applications

Some games require Windows 95 to reboot into DOS Mode in order to play properly. If this is the case, the Windows 95 multimedia applications software must be installed on the system to obtain sound support for the game. If you have not already done this, go to the section above titled "Installing the Windows 95 multimedia applications" before proceeding. The following lines must be in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file of the "Run MS-DOS Applications" icon on the Windows 95 desktop. If you have not created or configured the "Run MS-DOS Applications" icon, see document number 3101. If the "Run MS-DOS Applications" icon is already on the Windows 95 desktop, proceed with the following steps.

  1. To view the lines, right click the Run MS-DOS Applications located on the Windows 95 desktop. Click on the Properties setting from the menu that appears.
  2. The applicationís Properties window appears on the screen. Along the top of the window are six tabs: General, Program, Font, Memory, Screen, and Misc. Click the Programs tab to open that screen. Toward the bottom center of this window, click on the Advanced button to continue.

    The Advanced Program Settings window appears on the screen. The bottom screen portion of this window contains the AUTOEXEC.BAT lines. To verify the following settings according to the part number of the sound card you have, make sure there is a check mark in the box beside MS-DOS mode and a bullet beside Specify a new MS-DOS configuration.

    The CONFIG.SYS file in the lower portion of the screen must have the following two lines:

    DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
    DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE
    If these lines are not present, click the mouse in this file and enter them exactly as they appear above.

    The AUTOEXEC.BAT file may contain the following lines:

    SET SNDSCAPE=C:\SNDSCAPE
    SET BLASTER= A220 IXX DX T1
    C:\SNDSCAPE\SSINIT I

    If these lines are present, delete them and add the following line:

    CALL C:\SNDSCAPE\INITSS.BAT
  3. Once any necessary adjustments to these lines are made by simply clicking the mouse within the line, deleting the incorrect setting, and typing in the correct setting, verify that the bolded lines above are present before proceeding. Click the OK button when finished viewing or modifying these files to close the window. Click the OK button again to return to the Windows 95 desktop.

You should now be able to play the game in this MS-DOS mode session with sound support.

Note: The bolded lines above must be modified in each icon that is present on the Windows 95 desktop if the application is a MS-DOS mode application.
