Installing and Configuring (TFX) Tactical Fighter Experiment Under Windows 95
The following article describes the steps necessary to install and operate (TFX) Tactical Fighter Experiment under Windows 95. This application requires MS-DOS Mode to function. In order to do this, you need to modify the settings created after running the installation program to include the necessary drivers. If you install it using the Add/Remove Programs feature in Control Panel, Windows will configure the application with the settings it feels necessary to make the game function properly. However, it isnÃt fool-proof. The rest of this article will explain how to install and change the configuration.
Getting Ready to Install
Before installing TFX you will need to know the hardware settings of your sound card. If you know the settings already, skip this section and begin installing. Otherwise, grab a pen or pencil and follow this procedure to find the settings of your card:
If your card is a SoundBlaster
- Open the Control Panel,
- Double click System,
- Choose the Device Manager tab
- Choose the Sound, Video and Game controllers options.
- This will display the installed Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16 Plug and Play.
- Click the Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16 Plug and Play, then click Properties.
- Click the Resources tab. This will display the settings for the card. Write them down, close the Control Panel and skip to Installing TFX.
If your card is an Ensoniq
- Open the Control Panel,
- Double click System,
- Choose the Device Manager tab
- Choose the Sound, Video and Game controllers options.
- Two options are displayed: the Soundscape Plug and Play and Soundscape Plug and Play Sound Blaster Emulation.
- Click the Soundscape Plug and Play, then click Properties.
- Click the Resources tab. This will display some of the settings for the card.
- Write down the settings on a sheet of paper, close the Property sheet. This will return you to the Device Manager.
- Click Soundscape Plug and Play Sound Blaster Emulation, then click Properties.
- Click the Resources tab. This will display the rest of the settings for the card. Write them down, and close the Control Panel.
To Install Tactical Fighter Experiment
- Insert the Tactical Fighter Experiment CD into the CD-ROM.
- Click on Start, choose Settings and open Control Panel. Then click on Add/Remove Programs.
- The wizard will locate the INSTALL.EXE file located in the root of the CD. Click on the Finish button to start the install program.
- Highlight and select the target drive to install tfx. The default is C:.
- Continue through the Configuration Information screen by pressing Enter.
- Continue passed the Examining system screen by clicking on the Continue.
- Select the appropriate settings for the Control method, Detail level, Flight mode, Sound fx, Music, Joystick type, and Language.
Note: As long as you are using protected mode drivers for the sound card, the configuration menu will automatically default to the correct settings in Win95. Click on save when finished.- Continue through the inferno preview screen by pressing enter.
- To exit back to Windows 95, press Enter.
Configuring Tactical Fighter Experiment
To get TFX to properly operate, you must make changes to the MS-DOS mode configuration. To make these changes, perform the following steps.
- Right Click on the My Computer icon. Then choose Explore.
- Double click on the CD-ROM drive letter.
- Copy the DID.DAT and TFX.BAT files to the tfx directory on your hard drive.
- In Explorer, open the TFX directory on your hard drive.
- Find the TFX.BAT and right click then choose Properties.
- Choose the Program tab and then click on the Advanced button.
- Click on Suggest MS-DOS mode as necessary.
- Click on OK on the advanced program settings screen. Click on OK on the TFX.BAT properties screen.
