Installing and Configuring FIFA International Soccer Under Windows 95

This application requires MS-DOS Mode to function. In order to do this, modify the settings, which were created after running the installation program, to include the necessary drivers. If it is installed using the Add/Remove Programs feature in Control Panel, Windows configures the application with the settings it feels are necessary to make the game function properly. However, it is not fool-proof. The rest of this article explains how to install and change the configuration.

Before installing the game, you will need to know the hardware settings of your sound card. If you already know this information, skip this part, otherwise grab something to write with and follow the procedure listed below to find the hardware settings:

If your card is a SoundBlaster

  1. Open the Control Panel,
  2. Double click System,
  3. Choose the Device Manager tab
  4. Choose the Sound, Video and Game controllers options.
  5. This will display the installed Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16 Plug and Play.
  6. Click the Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16 Plug and Play, then click Properties.
  7. Click the Resources tab. This will display the settings for the card. Write them down, close the Control Panel and skip to Installing Privateer.
If your card is an Ensoniq
  1. Open the Control Panel,
  2. Double click System,
  3. Choose the Device Manager tab
  4. Choose the Sound, Video and Game controllers options.
  5. Two options are displayed: the Soundscape Plug and Play and Soundscape Plug and Play Sound Blaster Emulation.
  6. Click the Soundscape Plug and Play, then click Properties.
  7. Click the Resources tab. This will display some of the settings for the card.
  8. Write down the settings on a sheet of paper, close the Property sheet. This will return you to the Device Manager.
  9. Click Soundscape Plug and Play Sound Blaster Emulation, then click Properties.
  10. Click the Resources tab. This will display the rest of the settings for the card. Write them down, and close the Control Panel.

To Install FIFA International Soccer

  1. Click on Start, choose Settings and open Control Panel.
  2. Click on Add/Remove Programs.
  3. The wizard finds the INSTALL.COM file on the CD. Choose Finish to start the installation.
  4. Choose to install the 8Meg or 4Meg version, depending upon the amount of RAM in your system.
  5. Select a drive and directory to install the application into and hit <Enter>. FIFA is the default.
  6. The program installs the necessary files onto the hard drive
  7. After the files install, the sound card config screen opens. The installation program will find the correct card for the system.
  8. Options 2 and 3 allow you to change the settings on the sound card to match your hardware.
  9. After setting, choose Option 8 to exit and then exit installation to install.
  10. Once the files are copied, the MS-DOS window needs to be manually closed.

Configuring FIFA International Soccer

To get FIFA International Soccer to properly operate, changes must be made to the MS-DOS mode configuration. To make these changes, perform the following steps:
  1. Right-click on the My Computer icon and then choose Explore.
  2. Double-click on the drive letter the application was installed to and then double-click on the directory. The default is FIFA.
  3. Find the file FIFA.EXE, secondary-click on it, and then choose Properties.
  4. Choose the Program tab and then click on the Advanced button.
  5. Click on MS-DOS mode and then Specify a new MS-DOS Configuration and add these lines:

    CONFIG.SYS

    dos=high,umb
    device=c:\windows\himem.sys
    devicehigh=c:\windows\emm386.exe
    devicehigh=c:\mtm\mtmcdai.sys /d:mscd001
    (This line can be copied from your config.dos file, it depends on the CD-ROM drive you have - our example shows a Mitsumi quad speed)

    Note: The line listed below must be here if a Plug-n-Play cards are installed, otherwise it is not needed.

    devicehigh=c:\plugplay\drivers\dos\dwcfgmg.sys

    AUTOEXEC.BAT

    set tmp=c:\windows\temp
    set temp=c:\windows\temp
    set prompt=$p$g
    set winbootdir=c:\windows
    set path=c:\windows;c:\windows\command
    set blaster=a220 i5 d1 h5 p330 t6
    (The set blaster line should be copied from your autoexec.dos file, as it depends on your specific hardware settings.)
    lh C:\windows\command\mscdex /d:mscd001
  6. There will then be a DOS icon in the directory that can be placed on the desktop for your convenience. You can just drag the icon from the explorer and drop it on the desktop.
