How to Setup a Gateway 2000 28,800/33,600 Baud Windows Modem in Windows 3.x and MS-DOS Prompt

This document contains instructions for setting up a Gateway 2000 28.8/33.6 baud Windows modem in Windows 3.x and at the MS-DOS prompt in Windows. This document pertains to the Gateway 2000 fax modems with the part numbers MODISA007AAUS, MODISA007ABUS, MODISA007ACUS, and 6000550 and the diskette part number MODDSX008ABUS only. The modem and diskette part numbers are located on the invoice that came with the computer or with the parts, if purchased from Add-On sales. These instructions assume that the 3 ½ inch floppy drive is A: and the hard drive is C:.

Before installing the modem software

First, you need to determine whether the CMOS or BIOS on the system supports Plug & Play configurations. To determine this, enter the CMOS or BIOS screens and proceed to the Advanced section of the screens. Next, the Serial Port or COM Port setting must be set to disabled. Refer to the User's Guide that came with the computer for specific instructions on entering the BIOS or CMOS and the location of the Serial or COM port settings. Once any changes are made, save the values and exit CMOS.
Once the CMOS or BIOS changes are made, the ICU utility is loaded onto the hard drive. For complete instructions on installing the ICU utility for Windows version 1.44, please refer to document 1981.
After installing the ICU utility for Windows, open the Plug and Play group in the Program Manager. Double click the Intel ISA Configuration Utility icon. Click the modem in the list of hardware. Make sure that the ICU is identifying the modem at COM2, IRQ3. Once the settings are confirmed, click the Advanced menu item at the top of the window. Click the Locking Enabled settings to prevent the modem resources from being modified unless the settings are change in the ICU utility. Click the word File in the upper left hand corner of this window, then click the Save option. Exit the ICU program. Exit Windows, reboot the computer, and re-enter Windows. Proceed to the Installation instructions section of this document to continue.
