Installing ATI Mach 64 Video Drivers


The ATI video driver package contains two (or more) diskettes with new driver software for your ATI PCI video card. Detailed instructions for the drivers are contained in your User's Guide however, for your convenience, here are instructions for installing the Windows driver (It accelerates Windows' performance) and the video adapter utilities.

  1. Switch to the drive that contains the drivers. If they are on diskette, type A: and press Enter. If the drivers are on the GATEWAY 2000 SYSTEM CD, type D: (or applicable drive letter), press Enter, and then type

    CD\VIDRIVER\ATIVIDEO\PCI_GX\DISK1

    and press Enter.

  2. Type INSTALL. A screen appears titled "Gateway 2000, Version 1.1," with a pop-up menu titled "Main Menu," which has the following options:

    System information
    Quick Setup
    Drivers installation
    Utilities installation
    Diagnostics
    Advanced Setup

  3. Choose "Quick Setup." (Press the Down Arrow once to highlight Quick Setup, then press Enter.

  4. The Quick Setup menu appears, which lists many monitors, including screen size and maximum supported resolution. Choose your monitor from the list. Once you have highlighted the correct monitor on the list, press Enter, then press F10 to save the setting to the video card. The Main Menu reappears.

  5. Now choose "Drivers installation." A menu titled "Install Enhanced Drivers" appears, listing various software packages.

  6. Highlight Microsoft Windows using the Down Arrow key, then press Enter. (Note: WordPerfect and Microsoft Word appear on the list, but these refer to the DOS versions of these programs.) A small window pops up asking you to enter the letter of the drive you are installing from.

  7. If the drivers diskette is in the A: drive, press Enter. If the drivers are in a different drive, type in the letter of the correct drive. Another window, titled "Windows Enhanced Driver" appears.

  8. Choose "Windows 3.1 Drivers" if you have Windows 3.1 or Windows for Work groups 3.11.

  9. The next two pop-up windows contains general information. Read them if you wish and press Enter to move on to the next step. The next window, titled "Windows 3.1 Enhanced Drivers," allows you to choose whether to install the MVA drivers with the Display Drivers.

  10. If you don't plan to use Multimedia on this computer, choose Display Drivers only. If you plan to use Multimedia on this machine, install the Display Drivers and MVA Drivers. (MVA stands for Multimedia Video Accelerator.) A window pops up asking you to specify which directory Windows is loaded in.

  11. Unless you have loaded Windows in a different directory, accept the default of C:\WINDOWS. To do so, just press Enter. The screen changes to show the progress as the drivers are extracted and copied to the hard drive. If you are installing from a diskette, a window will pop up at some point asking you to insert disk #2 into the floppy drive. Do so, then press Enter. (If you are installing these drivers from the CD, this window will not appear.)

  12. The next two windows show general information. Press Enter when you finish reading each one. Finally the menu titled "Install Enhanced Drivers" returns. When you reach this point, the drivers are installed.

  13. Press Esc until you get back to the DOS prompt. When you get back to the DOS prompt, reboot the computer and start Windows.

  14. Open the ATI Desktop group from the Program Manager.

  15. Double-click the icon labeled "ATI Flexdesk+." This control panel allows you to choose the resolution and color depth you want.

  16. Select the settings you want, then click the "OK" button. A window pops up asking you to restart Windows.

  17. Click the "Restart Windows" button, and Windows will exit and restart. installation is complete!
