Driver Lines for Sony CD-ROM and Sound Card Combinations

This document is designed to assist you in determining which driver lines should be in you CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files depending on the sound card you are using with your Sony CD-ROM. Before making any changes to your existing CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT we request that you make a backup copy of these files.

Creating Backups of your Boot Files:

To Create a backup copy of the CONFIG.SYS, type the following at your C:\ prompt:

copy config.sys config.old
and press enter. Likewise, to create a copy of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, type this line at the C:\ prompt:
copy autoexec.bat autoexec.old.
and press enter. Now, if anything goes wrong during the process, you can return to the original files by typing the following at a C:\ prompt:
copy autoexec.old autoexec.bat
and press enter. Do the same for the config.sys file.

Why does the CD-ROM fail to load as I boot up the system?

Many times a CD-ROM drive fails to work because the lines in the AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS files are set incorrectly. This may be caused by:

In order to determine if the driver lines are correct in your boot files, you need to view what is currently being loaded.

  1. View the contents of the AUTOEXEC.BAT file type the following at the C:\> prompt:

    type autoexec.bat

and press Enter. Do the same for the CONFIG.SYS file, replacing AUTOEXEC.BAT in the command line with CONFIG.SYS. NOTE: If you have a printer, you can get a hard copy of the file by typing the following:

    Print autoexec.bat

and press enter. The system will prompt you to enter the NAME OF LIST DEVICE [PRN]:. Press enter and the file will be printed on your printer.

  2. Compare the lines in the files with the default lines found in the sections below.

If you find differences between the lines in your files and the lines in the following sections, you need to edit those files individually.

  1. To Edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file type the following at the C:\> prompt:

    edit autoexec.bat

and press Enter. Make the necessary changes to the file. When the changes have been made press the ALT key to highlight the word FILE at the top of the screen. Press the F key to bring down the File Menu. Press the X key to exit, and then press the Y key save changes. This saves the file and returns you to the C:\> prompt.

  2. To Edit the CONFIG.SYS file type the following at the C:\ prompt:

    edit config.sys

and press Enter. Make the necessary changes to the file. When the changes have been made press the ALT key to highlight the word FILE at the top of the screen. Press the F key to bring down the File Menu. Press the X key to exit, and then press the Y key save changes. This saves the file and returns you to the C:\> prompt. Reboot the system so the changes you made take effect.

If you did not find any of the lines referring to your CD-ROM or sound card as listed in the following sections, the drivers may not be loaded on your system. You need to refer to your Userís Guide and follow the instructions on how to load the drivers. You can also review the other documents concerning sound cards and CD-ROMs which are available through the main troubleshooting menu.

Once the drivers are reloaded, compare the lines again and make any necessary modifications.

NOTE: Always make sure that the jumper or switch settings match the settings in the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files. Consult your Userís Manual for the different switch and jumper settings. The manual also tells you what the specific switch settings are within the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files.

Recommended CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT Settings

Some special considerations when using the following sections: If there are lines listed in any section separated by the word OR in bold letters, your system file should match up with only one of those sections. The words that are highlighted within the line are the names of the directories where the drivers are stored. There are other lines in the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files that do not pertain to the CD-ROM or sound card.

DO NOT delete or modify any lines other than the ones pertaining to the CD-ROM or sound card.
