Gateway 2000 awarded "Federal 100" for leadership in government IT market

VP Bill Shea accepts prestigious award

NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D., March 31, 1997 - Gateway 2000's Bill Shea, vice-president of major accounts, was recently honored with the Federal l00 award from Federal Computer Week, an IDG publication. The recognition is the single most prestigious award in the federal information technology (IT) marketplace.

The Federal 100, nominated by Federal Computer Week readers and selected by an independent panel of judges, spotlights the important contributions IT professionals make toward the development, acquisition and management of government information technology.

"We are thrilled to be included in this prestigious group of federal government IT contributors," said Shea. "We simply try to offer the best value in our products, both portables and desktops, and make it easy to purchase from us with vehicles such as the GSA schedule. Our government customers seem to appreciate that approach."

Gateway, one of the world's leading direct marketers of PCs, has experienced tremendous growth in its federal government sales, particularly on the General Services Administration (GSA) Multiple Award Schedule 70 B/C. According to IDC, the company's reported revenues from the GSA for fiscal year 1996 grew 133% over 1995 levels to $191 million. These totals placed Gateway as the number one direct marketer on the schedule and second overall for the second consecutive year.

"The success of Gateway 2000 in the federal marketplace is attributable to the personalized approach taken by the Federal Government sales team and the inherent strength of our direct business model," said Bob Spears, senior vice president of the Americas Region at Gateway 2000.

Gateway's build-to-order model allows each PC to be configured specifically to the customer requirements after the order is placed. Through Gateway’s Custom Integration Services program, special software downloads and customer specific hardware can also be pre-loaded on the customer systems.
