Gateway 2000 names Sandra Lawrence new general manager of Kansas City facility

NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D., February 24, 1997 - Gateway 2000, Inc. (NYSE: GTW), a leading global marketer of PCs, today announced Sandra A.J. Lawrence has been named general manager of the Kansas City facility. Lawrence most recently served as director of the Center for Regional Development in Kansas City. In her new duties at Gateway, she will report directly to Bob Spears, senior vice president of the Americas Group.

In making the announcement, Spears said, "Sandra brings a diverse professional background to Gateway that gives her an outstanding understanding of business culture. She will be a very visible leader for us in Kansas City." Gateway has operated a customer call center in Kansas City since 1994. In the fall of 1996, the call center moved to its present location in the West Bottoms. Today, over 1,300 people are employed at the Kansas City facility.

Prior to working for the Center for Regional Development, Lawrence worked in investment banking as president of Stern Brothers & Co. and as a management consultant for Edwards & Associates, Inc., all in Kansas City. She has also held positions at Manekin Corporation in Gaithersburg, MD and Cadillac Fairview/Prentiss Properties in Falls Church, VA.

A native of Columbia, SC, Lawrence attended Vassar College and received a degree in psychology and statistics in 1978. She then attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received her Master of Architecture in 1982. After working as a project engineer with Capital Planning and Operations, she attended Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration, where she earned her Masters of Business Administration in 1985. She also serves on the following boards: Mercantile Bank, Trinity Lutheran Hospital, the Hall Family Foundation and the Minority Business Capital Corporation.
