On May 10th and 11th, more than 700 developers from 30 states and 20 countries attended the Be Developers Conference, held at the Westin Hotel in Santa Clara, California. For two days, developers listened, discussed, and questioned speakers from Be and other companies such as Netscape, Metrowerks, and NeoLogic about Be, the BeOS, and the opportunities and challenges of a new platform. Reporters from throughout the silicon valley also stopped in to listen in on the discussions, and speak with hundreds of developers. Twenty-one technical and general sessions were held covering everything from introductory BeOS programming to the implications of multithreaded application design. All of the technical sessions were recorded so the the BeDC could be reprised on line at the Be Web Site. Exciting products for the BeOS were shown or announced by Netscape, Metrowerks, NeoLogic, Adamation, BeatWare, Wolfram Research, O'Reilly & Associates, StarCode, Working Software, and a host of independent developers. The BeOS Preview Release was publicly unveiled, and the new features were demonstrated and discussed in detail. And of course, developers in attendance each received an advance copy of the Preview Release. Developers had a chance to talk with the folks from Be, and with each other. Whether it was in the sessions, in the development lab, at lunch, or at the closing reception, people were excited and motivated to work with the BeOS, and they enjoyed the chance to meet with others who feel the same way.
